Community service is paramount in White Plains, New York. The city recently announced participation in Make a Difference Day, Saturday, Oct. 27. If you are shopping for White Plains NY real estate, you will find passionate youth here who believe in fostering a global cause.
The city’s youth bureau will host a shoe drive to aid the Help Children of God not-for-profit organization of Haiti. Gently used or new shoes can be dropped off at the Youth Bureau, 11 Amherst Place, on Saturday 9–11 a.m, according to an Oct. 19 statement released by the city.
Make a Difference Day is the largest national day of community service. Last year, 3 million Americans participated in service projects.
Residents and non-residents alike are encouraged to participate in the shoe drive; however, there are many ways individuals, groups and businesses can make a difference throughout Westchester County.
The city suggests the following activities:
- tutor
- help a senior citizen or someone who is homebound
- become a mentor
- volunteer with Habitat for Humanity
- feeding the hungry
Anything you can do to make a difference in the city or county will help make the world a better place. For local service projects contact The Volunteer Center of United Way at (914) 948-4452 or contact the White Plains, New York Youth Bureau at (914) 422-1378, Ext. 2105.
